Mom Craft: Thrifty DIY Storage Boxes
Confession: My kids have TOO MANY TOYS. I have purged a lot but there still seems to be too many. This is normally what their toy room looks like:
I hate to go spend money to organize their toys (though if I was a millionaire, I totally would) so I came up with a way to get toys in one spot for a little bit of money. It’s not perfect, but it works. I started doing this about a year ago and all of my storage boxes are still in great condition.
I use diaper boxes for this project though any medium to large box would work.
I then choose from the vast variety of duck tape they now have available (it is SO FUN!).
I typically would only use two different tapes but sometimes I like to change it up.
Step 1: Cut off the top flaps of the box.
Step 2: Move on to the hardest part, taping up the inside. I start with the bottom first, then the long sides, then the short sides. If there a gap that wasn’t covered, just use a short piece of tape to cover it. If you are using black tape on the inside, it won’t be noticeable.
*Side note: You can either tape over the handles (on a diaper box) or push the tape around them. Here is one I have done with handles in the past (I now prefer to just tape over them).
Step 3: Tape the bottom of the box. This helps it hold under the weight of your items that are placed inside.
Step 4: Tape around the whole box. I use one piece of tape to go all the way around. As long as you are pressing down as you go, this should be one fluid placement.
Step 5: Tape the top edges. I get as far up as I can go on the sides and then use a trim (normally black) to make it look more polished. To do this, take one piece of tape and center it on the top edge then fold over. You will need one piece of tape for each side on top instead of just one piece all the way around.
Here is the finished product.
If look closely, you can see the lettering through the pink. It doesn’t bother me but you could just put a second layer on and you wouldn’t be able to see it anymore.
I love that you can make coordinating boxes and that you can do them in any style you like!
